The Richard Allen Cultural Center/Museum opened its doors on July 19, 1992. We are located across the street from the historic Bethel AME Church which was part of the Underground Railroad. The center offers a glimpse into the history of African-Americans, both local and nationwide. It was created to ensure that the rich heritage of African- Americans and their profound effect on American society would not be lost.
Our mission and purpose is to educate the public about the rich history of African- Americans and their contributions to every phase of American life. We promote a greater awareness of African-American heritage through research and cultural activities that enhance interracial understanding.
Our mission is fulfilled by sponsoring workshops, seminars and lectures reaching out to students of Unified School Districts (in the area), colleges and adults. We also partner with local school districts, the public library, universities and other museums throughout Kansas.
Educational programs are also offered through museum exhibits, tours, research opportunities and traveling exhibits for the general public. We also have a free year-round tutoring program available for any student who needs the service. We have helped over 350 children improve their academic skills.
We invite you to become a part of this dynamic organization. Through your annual membership or sponsorship, the needs of the larger community can be served. Together we can fulfill our motto: "Unity: For the Love of All People".
